Winter and our Older Dogs

Many people with arthritis feel more pain during winter months. Whilst we don’t know the exact reason for this, it’s assumed it is because of the drop in air pressure which can allow the tissues to swell. Also cold has an effect on muscles, and the stiffening of muscles in cooler weather can be uncomfortable. It’s the same for our older pets!

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that our pets suffer from. Damage begins in the cartilage, and as it begins to erode over time, the bones come into direct contact with each other. This causes damage to the bone. The joints most likely to be affected are the weight-bearing areas – pelvis, hips, knees, ankles and spine.

What may begin with mild discomfort for your pet, can become increasingly painful. This is especially true for overweight pets!

Osteoarthritis is more commonly seen in mature dogs, rather than cats. Indicators include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Personality change
  • Falling behind on walks
  • Repeated licking of a joint
  • Stiffness hours after exercise
  • Difficulty getting up in mornings

So, what can you do?  Make sure your dog is warm and comfortable in the winter, and is not overweight. Some of the pain can be alleviated by providing joint support. This can be done either through medication from your Veterinarian, or by providing nutritional joint support.

NUTRITIONAL JOINT SUPPORT
Waltham science has shown that there is a unique benefit in including Stabilised Green Lipped Mussel in your dog’s diet.  It’s a complex cocktail of nutrients that work in synergy for total joint health. Glucosamine is only one of the known components that help with joint health.  Green Lipped Mussels naturally contain the following:

  • Chondroitin sulphate
  • Glucosamine
  • Omega 3 fatty Acids
  • Eicosatetranioc acid (ETA), a strong anti-inflammatory agent found exclusively in SGLM
  • EPA and DHA, which also play a role in inflammatory reactions
  • Antioxidants and minerals that help reduce free radical damage to the joint
  • Marine Lipid Extract

WALTHAM research has shown that SGLM can reduce joint pain, reduce joint swelling and crepitus, and increase mobility.
